give it away to keep it

I’ve never been to an AA meeting, but on various podcasts, I’ve heard plenty about the 12 Steps that have been so successful in helping people struggling with addiction find their way to sobriety.

I’ve noticed how many of these steps are applicable outside of fighting an addiction.

For the last week, anytime I’ve been in the car with Roman, I’ve had George Mumford’s Unlocked playing on Spotify; I’m determined to help the boys master their minds and begin to see the benefits of meditation.

In this morning’s passage, George described his struggle with addiction and how one day a friend whom he used to get high with visited him and invited him to an AA meeting. After initially declining the invite, George asked his friend how he was doing and how AA had helped him—he noticed his friend looked healthy and happy, with no signs of someone using.

The friend said that in order to keep what he had (his sobriety), he had to share it (help someone else struggling).

“You have to give it away to keep it.”

As I always do, I immediately related that quote that resonated with me to the Authentic Life.

I first connected some of the “whys” behind my focus on sharing the Authentic Life with the world—why I changed the future of my business, why I’ve gotten rid of the other distractions, and why I create so much content. These are all my ways of giving away what I have.

I then connected the idea of giving away being the only way to keep something to our unique gifts and talents. The only way we get to keep these unique gifts and talents is to give them away—not necessarily for free, but by sharing them with the world. Sharing is the same as giving away in my eyes.

So many of us suffer from a scarcity mindset that leads us to hoard what we have out of fear that someone else will know our secret, have what we have, or even surpass us in success.

I’ve never seen a situation where an abundant mindset, one willing to give away, was the wrong mindset to have.

I want to encourage you to think more about giving and trust that through giving/sharing you will keep what you have and find more of it.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC
