do it for you

There’s been a lot of conversation, even controversy, about Justin Bieber’s Coachella performance. I’ve only seen clips and read about the YouTube sing-along, but I’m a fan of what he did.

First, it seems that his fans—his true fans loved the stroll down memory lane, which is what really matters. Who cares what the media has to say when they aren’t the ones he created his music for?

Second, and I’m not sure if this is true, but it sounds plausible, that by playing his songs on YouTube and singing along to them, he technically wasn’t performing the songs, so he avoided having to pay royalties/fees to the label that owns the rights to the song—a label he had a very public falling out with. I love the possibility of the Creative getting one over on the corporations via a loophole.

Third, and most importantly, it seemed like he was genuinely enjoying the performance, which is even more important than his fans enjoying it.

I don’t even care about all the attention the performance has gotten, how much he was paid compared to other artists, or other details.

I just care that he did it.

His performance was a reminder that sometimes you just have to do things for your Self and trust that your true fans (yes, YOU have true fans) will love it as much as you do.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC
