you have a million problems until you have just one

I started a different Daily Note this morning before heading to church with Silas, but later in the afternoon, I watched a new vlog from Chris Williamson and felt that it, along with a short reminder of the preciousness of our health, was meant to be today’s Note.

If you’ve been reading my Daily Notes or following me for a while, you’ll know that Chris is one of my favorite podcast hosts with his show Modern Wisdom. Recently, I’d noticed him posting on social media some pics of what looked like routine bloodwork and preventative health efforts, and had no idea that he had been sick the last couple of years. Seeing how sick he’s been, the lengths he’s gone to find answers and solutions, while still producing high-quality podcasts and talks, only makes me respect and like him even more.

As I watched this vlog, I couldn’t help but feel sympathy for Chris while also feeling gratitude for the health that I have–I’d love to look like Chris, but I definitely don’t want to have to battle all of the issues that has has.

Which brings me to the two points I wanted to share:

First, do whatever you can to take the best care of your Self. There’s no guarantee that you’ll avoid sickness, disease, or other ailments, but you don’t want to look back wishing you had exercised, eaten cleaner, avoided toxins, etc. I don’t know Chris personally, but I’m fairly certain he was living a clean, active, and healthy lifestyle and engaging in conversations with healthcare leaders, which probably makes his situation a little more frustrating. I hope there will come a point at which he realizes he did everything he could to avoid the situation, and I hope that brings him some peace.

Second, don’t wait to do the things you’ve been wanting to do. We often talk about our mortality as motivation to live the life we want today, but our fragility should act as a similar motivation. Thankfully, Chris has been able to continue his podcast, talks, and other businesses, but as you’ll hear, that wasn’t guaranteed and still isn’t. Don’t look back wishing you had done something or become a different version of your Self, only to have your health or mortality keep you from doing so.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,
