my pitch for Biggie’s “Juicy” representing the American Dream

I consider my Self lucky that I get to be the guinea pig for my friend (and AlignedLife podcast guest) Matt Zeigler’s creative ideas.

A couple of weeks ago, he texted me an idea he had and an ask—that I pitch a song to be debated for inclusion in the Cultish Creative Music Club. The only caveat was that the song had to relate to celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States; basically, it had to have a theme or be pitched to celebrate America.

I have to admit, I’m surprised at the song I chose, and I can’t quite remember how I exactly got to it.

Naturally, I went to a few of my favorite artists: J. Cole. Kendrick Lamar, and Tupac. I considered a few songs, but none of them felt right. Plus, I wanted my submission to be a little bit of a surprise, and picking a song from those three would have been too obvious.

While I don’t list Biggie as one of my all-time favorites, I am a huge fan of his music, and I think the only thing that keeps him ranked a little lower (still top 10 for sure) is only having two albums—I don’t really count the posthumous albums that felt too forced for me. Growing up, I spent many hours listening to Ready to Die and Life After Death; if you read yesterday’s Omen, you know I appreciate lyricism, and Biggie’s pen was a great example of the type of hip-hop I love.

So, I recorded my pitch for Juicy, which you can hear at the beginning of this episode.

I highly encourage you to stay for the entire episode, though, because Matt and his co-host Joe are pure geniuses. They break down my pitch and the song in such an interesting, engaging way. This is only the third song- the first that was actually pitched- that they’ve broken down, and I’m in awe of how they approach analyzing music.

Plus, you need to find out if Juicy makes the cut.
