the flow of money
Money was never meant to sit still.
We’ve been taught to treat it like a scarce resource; that it is something you need to protect once you get it. But money is abundant. It flows like a current. A current that stops moving isn’t wealth. It’s a dam waiting to break or a pond going stagnant.
There’s a term for this in economics: the velocity of money. It measures how quickly money moves through the economy—how many times a dollar exchanges hands in a given year. A high velocity of money signals a strong economy, as people and businesses spend money quickly. A low velocity of money signals a weak economy (or the anticipation of a weaker economy), as people and businesses hold onto money more.
I want to borrow it and make it personal.
Your velocity of money is how quickly and fluidly money flows through and to you. Two people can earn the exact same income, yet have two totally different velocities. One holds it, afraid to lose what they have earned. The other lets it flow—earning, saving, spending, investing, and giving—and ends up moving more value through the world than the first person might in a decade.
So, how do you increase it?
Let me share three ways.
Provide more value to the world. Money flows toward value, not effort. You can work harder and create nothing more. The fastest way to increase your value is to offer what only you can offer— service, skills, or work that comes from your unique gifts and talents. Discover that, and you don’t just create more value. You attract more money because of it.
By increasing the amount of money flowing to you, you increase your ability to use it in ways that will continue to increase its velocity.
More value brings more income. Income is the echo.
Spend in alignment. How you spend your money signals your stewardship to the Universe. Every dollar that leaves your hand is a vote for what you believe is worth building. Spend without thinking, and you scatter the energy. It moves, but it moves nowhere in particular. Spend in alignment with your values, and that same dollar does double duty: it meets a need and expresses who you are.
Because money flows like energy, it flows to good stewards. Use it for things, experiences, and people that matter to you and operate in alignment with your Authentic Life.
Direct it to others. This is the lever most people skip because it feels like loss. Giving, tithing, funding someone else’s dream—none of it feels like it increases your velocity. It feels like it decreases your balance. But money you direct to others doesn’t leave the system. It accelerates through it. It comes back changed. It comes back as opportunity, relationships, trust, sometimes more money, always more life.
Increasing velocity feels like the opposite of security. It feels like loosening the grip when every instinct, and rule you’ve been taught, says to tighten it. But the tighter we hold money, the less it moves, and the less it moves, the less comes back.
I’ve witnessed clients dam up every dollar, terrified that spending or giving meant less for them. What actually happened was the opposite: the money that stayed still stayed small. The money they moved into their growth, into causes they believed in, and into people they trusted came back larger than it left, and not always as money.
What does the velocity of money look like for you?
Is it sitting in an account, untouched, because touching it feels like risk? Is it moving, but carelessly, without any connection to what you actually value? Or is it already flowing through your work, your spending, your giving, fast enough that you can feel it working?
Wealth doesn’t increase by holding tighter. You increase it by increasing the turnover. Provide more value. Spend in alignment. Direct it to others.
That’s the current. Go ahead and get in it.
