look good, feel good, be good
I’ve always had this mantra.
No matter what my wardrobe choices were growing up, I always made sure I felt good in the clothes I wore. If I didn’t feel good about what I was wearing, how could I walk around with the confidence needed to reach my goals?
Now, I’m not saying fashion SHOULD matter to your confidence; maybe if I were more enlightened, I wouldn’t care as much, but in my current state of consciousness, I still enjoy expressing my Self through what I wear, and I’m going to make sure I like what I put on and see in the mirror.
The key to this mantra, though, is to look good for yourself, not for others. If you’re doing it for others, chances are you aren’t going to feel good, and you won’t be at your best.
I’m sure some of you might think you aren’t able to “look good” because you can’t afford expensive or designer brands. You’re wrong. Nothing about this mantra has to do with the cost of the clothing; it’s all about putting together something that makes you feel good with whatever you have available.
Or, you might not be able to “look good” in your eyes because you have a uniform, whether a true uniform or an assumed look, you have to wear. I’m willing to bet there is still something in the uniform that can help you express your Self and feel good. Maybe it’s your haircut. Maybe it’s your makeup. Maybe it’s a tie. Maybe it’s jewelry. You can strive to look good within the constraints you find your Self in.
Lately, I’ve taken my look good, feel good, be good mantra to Instagram and have been posting outfit pics in my Stories most days. At first, it felt weird, but now I enjoy making sure the fit I have on is one I’m happy to share with the world. I don’t really have any goals other than to document what makes me feel good, push my Self outside my comfort zone with taking the selfie, be a little more artistic with the photography and music selection in the post, introduce brands I know to others, and hopefully inspire someone to rethink how they step out of the house.
I’m not going to lie —I’ll share this with you since you’re a Daily Note reader —but I’m also setting the stage for creative collaboration with some of the brands I really like that have messages that align with the Authentic Life—P & Co and Rhythm being two examples. I’m not attached to this outcome, but I do think it’ll be really cool when, in a few years, I announce a creative campaign with some of the brands—the collabs will be obvious and authentic. If you want to follow along and check out some of my favorite brands, see my IG highlights here.
Don’t downplay the impact of how you feel about your Self on your day and how simply liking what you see in the mirror can change your internal state.
See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,
JC
