independence

Putting our Selves in a position of independence should be a goal for everyone, and by independence I am thinking professionally first, but ultimately any situation you find your Self dependent on others.

It doesn’t mean that you have to leap into independence, but making sure that you can escape to independence if you ever need to is becoming a must. I’ve been thinking a lot about the ESPN firing of Ryan Clark and other longtime employees and how it was done in such a heartless way, at least with Clark.

I think Clark will end up being ok and, honestly, better off, as he has a very popular podcast, The Pivot. Given his success on ESPN, I think he can make The Pivot even better and now have complete freedom over how he shows up and shares his craft with the world—and we’re beginning to see independents having just as much financial success with smaller audiences because they own their work.

I doubt Clark started The Pivot as a backup plan for ESPN—his emotional conversation on his podcast tells me he really wanted to be at ESPN, but the podcast is going to help him land on his feet quickly.

What is your version of The Pivot?

If your career, partner, or anything/anyone you are dependent on were taken away from you, would you be able to continue on independently?

Not sure where you can build your independence, then look to your unique gifts and talents.

While you don’t need to be independent start using your unique gifts and talents in your free time and see how the world responds—how you can be of service to others. You don’t have to go all in on whatever it is you discover, but you can slowly build on the side without the pressure of your work having to provide for you (yet).

Who knows where this will lead you.

You could eventually have enough success that you voluntarily choose independence.

Or, you could have your version of The Pivot in case you are forced into independence.

Either way, tapping into your unique gifts and talents and connecting with your Authentic Self is a great first step towards preparing for independence, should you ever need it.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC
