comfort is a monster
This week, I finally got to see The Odyssey downtown at the Indiana State Museum in 70mm (the largest screen), and as I expected, I loved it—Christopher Nolan is my favorite director, so I went in expecting to love it. I’m going to see it again Monday evening with a couple of friends, and I’m looking forward to seeing what I might have missed the first time around.
Instagram must have picked up on me seeing the movie because it started feeding me tons of Odyssey content. One of the posts really captured my attention.
The post talked about all the monsters—the cyclops, the witch, the whirlpool in the sea—throughout the movie, and how none of them, despite how scary they were, slowed Odysseus down—except for one. Calypso.
Calypso was the least scary—she was beautiful, nursed him to health, offered immortality, and loved Odysseus, yet kept him captive on her island for seven years (I know it’s open to interpretation whether Odysseus was held captive or subconsciously chose to stay on the island—the movie definitely makes it look like he was held captive).
The post had two slides that I immediately shared in my Stories—the second one I shared twice intentionally to drive home:
“Maybe the most dangerous monsters you will ever face won’t look like monsters at all.”
“It will look like a life that’s just comfortable enough to make you forget the one thing you were meant to build.”
The most dangerous monster we might face is the comfort that keeps us from pursuing our Authentic Life.
Gives me shivers.
See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,
JC
