building traditions
Today we drove up to New Buffalo, Michigan, for a few days to revive our family summer trip. We started coming up here in 2019, and thanks to AAU, last summer was our first year without going.
I wasn’t sure how much the boys enjoyed the trip until last week, when they each mentioned on separate occasions how excited they were for our trip. I knew they had good times during our trips, but I didn’t know it had become so special to them.
Building traditions can make ordinary experiences into ones that stand the test of time, and I think traditions help make life more enjoyable.
When it comes to trips, we’ve had some pretty cool trips, yet the repeated three-hour trip to a small town on Lake Michigan is one that the boys have a special attachment to.
Traditions don’t have to be overly expensive or elaborate.
Although they won’t admit it, and their lives at home wouldn’t suggest it, I think the reason they love the New Buffalo trip so much is that we spend a lot of time together and uninterrupted by sports, practices, school, work, etc. While it seems that the boys are always on the go and that they’d rather do anything than stay at home and hang with their family, New Buffalo shows me what really matters the most to them.
See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,
JC
