back to school

This morning, the boys head back to school:

Silas in 2nd

Leo in 7th

Roman in 9th

It’s hard to believe they are as old as they are, but really hard to believe that Roman is in high school.

Today’s first day of high school is more than just his first day at a new school; it’s also the first day of walking a new path.

In our school corporation, there are two high schools, and we can choose which one we want the boys to attend. I think our expectation has always been that the boys would go to the high school we’re districted to, but as Roman got older and more clear on his goals regarding basketball, we realized we had a decision to make: go to the high school that we’ve always planned on him going to or go to the other high school that has a better basketball program and coaching staff that do a great job of developing their players to reach the next level.

Thankfully, both schools are strong academically, so we didn’t have to consider academic factors in the decision; the decision was purely a business decision for Roman to put him in the best position to pursue his dreams.

While it was an easy decision basketball-wise, it was hard because all of Roman’s classmates from kindergarten through eighth grade are going to the other high school. It’s not like he doesn’t know anyone at his high school, and he’s been able to establish a new crew at his high school over the summer, but entering a new building, high school, and leaving behind the comforts of long-term friendships and familiarity is a tough thing for a fifteen-year-old to do.

I know it was the right decision for his current goals.

I also know it was the right decision for Roman in the grand scheme of life.

In the future, he will be presented with opportunities that will require him to walk away from what is comfortable and safe. Many people opt to stay comfortable and safe, missing the chance to grow and move closer to their authentic lives.

I want the boys to never shy away from change, discomfort, and fear because of the growth that awaits them on the other side, and today’s experience for Roman (and the rest of the year) will give him confidence to do it again when it’s necessary in the future.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC
