measuring health
“It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.”
- Jiddu Krishnamurti
I don’t like to think of society as sick, but if I step back and look at many things today, perhaps there is a little sickness there.
The amount of time spent on mobile devices.
The obsession with social media.
The physical health of the average American.
The tribalness of the political landscape.
The rise of mental health struggles, including a significant increase among the youth.
The normalization of pharmaceutical solutions instead of preventative or natural health improvements.
The acceptance of living a life that doesn’t fulfill.
I know these issues, or ones that were unique to different periods (time spent on screens used to be time watching TV), have always been there–I’m not sure if they are more prevalent today or if we just hear more about them because of social media and technology.
Nonetheless, what has become the norm appears to be less healthy than it was in the past in many regards.
I was reluctant to write this Note because I don’t want to add to the negativity that I see running rampant on social media—there’s already enough of that on your timeline, but I felt it was important to remind you that you don’t have to settle for “normal” if you don’t want.
You can prioritize your health—spirit, mind, and body—and create your own benchmark of health, rather than the one that has been presented to you.
If your health is defined by an unhealthy “normal”, are you really that healthy?
See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,
JC
