get some rest
“Take rest; a field that has rested gives bountiful crops.”
-Ovid
I spent all day Wednesday in bed.
Not by choice, though.
Tuesday evening, a nasty stomach virus came over me and left me with aches, chills, and feeling like I had been hit by a bus. I cancelled my Wednesday meetings because I knew there was no way I’d be feeling better, and on the rare chance that I did, I wasn’t about to risk passing whatever I had on to my clients.
So that set my Wednesday up to be a day of rest–uninterrupted rest since no one in the house wanted whatever knocked me out. I can’t remember the last time I was able to lie in bed for so long and just rest. It’s not something I’d want to do often, but it was so nice, despite feeling bad.
I woke up on Thursday feeling better, but not 100%, and Friday, I was back to normal.
I know that taking Wednesday to rest helped me bounce back quickly, and it reminded me to take more time to rest when possible. Whether it’s getting to be earlier, taking a power nap in the afternoon, or skipping an unnecessary errand on the weekend and being ok with relaxing on the couch for a bit.
There’s a line where resting becomes laziness, and I think it’s an easy line to see. But, I think sometimes it’s hard not to feel like you’re being lazy when you’re resting. I have to tell my Self that it’s ok to spend an hour on the couch and watch a movie on the weekend, especially if the rest of the day has been busy.
I’m not sure if Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s flu was my body forcing me to rest, or just a short-lived stomach virus–I think it was just a virus, but it’s made me more aware of the quality of rest I get throughout the week.
Resting will never be lazy when it’s intentional.
See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,
JC
