loyal friendships

“Nothing delights the mind as much as loving and loyal friendships.”

-Seneca

It’s only fitting that today’s Daily Note ended up getting a last-minute change. This morning, I made a trip into downtown Indianapolis to meet a close friend and his family for breakfast. It was great to finally meet his wife and two boys, and it was even better to have a solid hour and a half to just talk with him.

Towards the end of our conversation, we talked about what Seneca reminds us–I did not see this quote until my drive home, which is why my rewrite of today’s Note seems perfectly synchronic.

We both agreed that we are more interested in quality over quantity when it comes to relationships and no longer looking to force relationships where they aren’t meant to be. I also shared with him what I wrote in a previous Daily Note: I only want to pour into, spend time with, and support those who support me, just as he always has. I’m blessed to have a lot of amazing people in my life. I have no need to chase people’s attention or friendship–if people are meant to be in my life, they will be. I can redirect that time and energy that was used to chase people and direct it to those already with me.

In a separate, yet connected experience from this week, I shared with the social media and digital marketing student group at Michigan State that I believed the pendulum of social media and human interaction is going to swing back in the opposite direction of where we are today. People will prefer and prioritize human interaction over the convenience of social interactions through technology–they’ll look to take the connections they’ve made with like-minded people offline and to in-person experiences.

Loving and loyal friendships have always been important, as Seneca pointed out many years ago, and I believe they will become even more important in the coming years, especially if you are pursuing your authentic life–there’s no room for those not aligned with you.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC
